comic books

America's favorite Amazon princess turns 75 this year — Wonder Woman first swung her golden lasso in All-Star Comics #8 in December 1941, and she's still fighting for freedom and the rights of women.

DC Entertainment is celebrating the Amazon's birthday with a series of events at this year's San Diego Comic-Con; a street corner in the downtown Gaslamp District has been turned into a tribute to Wonder Woman's home on Paradise Island, complete with artists painting giant portraits of her, and a replica of her famous invisible jet.

If you've stepped foot in a comic book store in the past few years, you'll have noticed a distinct shift. Superheroes, once almost entirely white men, have become more diverse.

There's been a biracial Spider-Man, a Muslim Ms. Marvel, and just last week, Marvel announced that the new Iron Man will be a teenage African-American girl.

Joining this lineup today is Kong Kenan, a Chinese boy who, as part of a reboot of the DC comics universe, is one of four characters taking up Superman's mantle.

The latest films in the Star Wars and Hunger Games franchises were not just box office smashes. They also shared something else in common: Both tapped into a widespread debate about casting.

The Sterling Gates Fan Page on Facebook

This weekend, DC Comics writer Sterling Gates will host a comics writing seminar for kids at three libraries in Oklahoma City.

KOSU's Michael Cross talks with Gates about his interest in comics and what kind of advice he gives to aspiring writers.

The first two workshops are taking place Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Southern Oaks Library and at 4 p.m. at Capitol Hill Library, and Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Edmond Library. You can find out more information at MetroLibraries.org.

Comic Con Comes to Tulsa This Weekend

Nov 5, 2014

Comic book artists, writers, movie stars and fans merge into a three day pop culture carnival at the Cox Buisness Center in Tulsa this weekend.

Captain Kirk, Freddy Kruger and Daryl from the Walking Dead walk into a bar. That's not a joke. It's actually quite possible at the Wizard World Tulsa Comic Con, as William Shatner, Robert Englund and Norman Reedus will meet with fans there this weekend.

OKC Store Celebrates Free Comic Book Day

May 2, 2014

With the recent up rise in comic book culture it's no surprise that the, now, thirteen-year-old tradition of Free Comic Book Day has practically become a holiday.

KOSU's Maude Garrett reports on the annual event and how one local shop is participating.

Buck Berlin, owner of Oklahoma City's New World Comics, always celebrates free comic book day with the fans in mind and festivities running for a full 24 hours.
