While the recent shootings of Michael Brown and Tamir Rice by police, and the shootings of Eric Harris and Nehemiah Fischer in Oklahoma, greater scrutiny has been given nationwide to how police interact with the public and when deadly force should be used.
The Washington Post has now compiled a database of every fatal shooting by police in 2015, as well as of every officer killed by gunfire in the line of duty. The Post looked exclusively at shootings, not killings by other means, such as stun guns and deaths in police custody.
The newspaper breaks down the statistics in several ways, such as race, sex, age, and location. One alarming statistic they found is that Oklahoma and Arizona have an abnormally high number of police shootings, with shooting rates double that of most other states.
Below is The Takeaway's interview with reporter Jon Swaine of The Guardian, who has also published a comprehensive database of all Americans killed by law enforcement in 2015.
