Ferris O'Brien's Top 10 Albums of 2014

The Spy's Ferris O'Brien combs through hundreds of albums every year. Below are his ten favorite albums of 2014.

10. Morrissey - World Peace Is None of Your Business

Full disclosure: I'm a huge fan! But I'm also extremely critical of any Moz output. World Peace is lyrically on point, laden with wit and hooks. Easily his best since 2004's You Are the Quarry, plus it contains quite possibly one of Mozzer's best songs in years: "Staircase at the University."

9. Alvvays - Alvvays

This band and this record is EVERYTHING I love about music. Beautiful. Flawless. Lovely.

8. Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

Your annoying little sister grew up and guess what? She's pretty cool.

7. Bryan Ferry - Avonmore

Ahhhhhhhhh... Hello!!! ITS BRYAN FERRY!!!

6. Cloud Nothings - Here and Nowhere Else

Think Bob Mould fronting mid 90's Pumpkins doing Real Estate tunes! Loud. Hooky. Raw. Fuzzy. Angsty.

5. Tyson Meade - Tomorrow in Progress

Love, love, love this man! And he's made a record that if you like music, you will LOVE this record.

4. Ariel Pink - Pom Pom

Easily the strangest bird alive, but he's made one of the most flawlessly brilliant records in years.

3. Real Estate - Atlas

Jangly guitars and those smooth up-in-ya silky vocals. Hands down one of the best long distance driving records ever!

2. Jaws - Be Slowly

Crashed your house party.
Ate all your food.
Drank all your booze.
Woke up with a really cool tattoo.

1. Broncho - Just Enough Hip to be Woman

Like a kick to the face followed by a long "first love" kinda kiss whilst Simple Minds "Don't You Forget About Me" plays in the back ground and John Hughes yells... "Action!"

Honorable mentions:

  • Eagulls - Eagulls
  • Temples - Sun Structures
  • U2 - Songs of Innocence
  • Caribou - Our Love
  • Royal Blood - Royal Blood
