OCu Film Series - 'Treeless Mountain'

February 10th 2013 2:00pm - 5:00pm at OCU Meinders School of Business

Winner of many international awards, including the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival, “Treeless Mountain” luminously renders the experience of childhood. When their mother needs to leave in order to find their estranged father, 6-year-old Jin and her younger sister, Bin, are left to live with their Big Aunt for the summer. With only a small piggy bank and their mother's promise to return when it is full, the two young girls are forced to acclimate to changes in their family life. Counting the days, and the coins, the two bright-eyed young girls eagerly anticipate their mother's homecoming. The Village Voice called it “Simply one of the best films about childhood ever made.”

The theme of this year’s film series is “Escape From Freedom,” borrowed from the title of a book by social theorist Erich Fromm. The book describes Fromm’s theories of humanity’s views on freedom and what the world is like without it. The book will be available for purchase at all film screenings in the series.
