UN Event in OKC Focuses on Refugees

The topic of refugees is taking place this Saturday through the United Nations Association of Oklahoma City.

President Sinead Maguina says she doesn’t understand the controversy over accepting refugees when we are talking about more than 65-million displaced people "and about 23 million are refugees. And, from that half of them are children. They're being denied health care, education. So, we just want to promote economic and social advancement for them. Just because, I mean, they're human beings."

Maguina says Oklahomans shouldn’t be blocking refugees because some of them come from places with terrorist activity.

"I think that's just a misconception that society puts out, and, I feel like, if they were a little bit more open minded they would see that just because it's a completely different culture doesn't meant they are terrorists."

She says she hopes attendees get a sense of solidarity with the men and women of our global community who are responding to this humanitarian challenge.

One of the speakers at Saturday’s event includes the Director of Membership for the United Nations Association out of New York.

It takes place in the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center on the State Fairgrounds from 1:30 to 3:30.
