Travel on Turkey Day Expected to Increase

ok.gov

AAA expects more than 615,000 Oklahomans to travel this Thanksgiving Day weekend, an increase of 1.3% over last year.

Spokesman Chuck Mai says improvements in the economy are encouraging people in the state to hit the road.

"The consumer confidence index is showing some improvement. A lot of folks are thinking better about their future economically, wages are rising, consumer spending is increasing and gas prices are pretty good. We're still about 12 cents below where we were last year."

Mai says more than 555,000 Oklahomans will travel by personal vehicles, while nearly 50,000 will fly and almost 10,000 will choose another mode of transportation.

He says says, if you are one of those traveling, AAA is providing a mobile App to make your journey easier.

"That thing will find gas prices for you, get you emergency road service if you are a AAA member. It can help you find accommodations around the country , make reservations for you. You can even look at attractions and what's happpening in the places you're driving through."

Nationwide, AAA is projecting 48.7 million Americans to travel more than 50 miles from their home which is the most since 2007, the year before the recession.
