Transgender Oklahoma City officer to seek House post

paulasophia.com

A transgender Oklahoma City police officer retired from the force Monday and plans to run for an open seat in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Democrat Paula Sophia Schonauer said she plans to file paperwork on Thursday to be a candidate for House District 88 in central Oklahoma City that includes Heritage Hills and the Midtown and Plaza districts.

A U.S. Army veteran of Desert Storm who joined the Oklahoma City Police Department in 1992, Schonauer retired from the department on Monday so she could run for office.

Schonauer was featured on the radio program Snap Judgment in 2012, where she spoke of her transition to female and how she was able to prove to skeptical colleagues that she was still capable of doing her job. Hear that story below.
