Studies Continue on School A-F Report Card Changes

State Board of Education members say further study is needed before they make any permanent changes to the school A-F report card system. They say they want to get it right this time.

The A-F system of rating schools in Oklahoma has been a contentious issue since it began a few years ago. This year, the State Department of Education was mandated to study it, and look for solutions to fixing it.

The department has been looking at other state’s systems, and also commissioned a study from OU and OSU researchers. But Superintendent Joy Hofmeister says they’re not ready to make changes yet.

"We need to work to find the balance and get it right, and again, not try to beat the clock."

Hofmeister said they are uncertain what the new federal law will require of accountability systems, which is a main reason they are waiting.

The State Board of Education also sent recommendations to the legislature on ways to alleviate the teacher shortage. The recommendations include recognizing out of state teaching certifications, expanding opportunities of adjunct teachers, and building on their teacher recruitment program.
