The Oklahoma City Public Schools approved a new emergency operations plan at last night’s board meeting. The new plan lays out specific guidelines for responding to things like fires, tornadoes, earthquakes and school shooters.
But for the most part—the new plan details how the schools will respond no matter what the emergency is. How they will evacuate, take shelter, and how classes will re-unite if broken up.
"We understand that we cannot anticipate every possible emergency. We’ve chosen to develop a plan for the ones that we can, and to develop the tools that are useful in any type of emergency."
Ian Wolfe, the administrator for safety at Oklahoma City Public Schools says the way schools respond to emergencies has changed. They used to have an emergency plan for every possible scenario—but he said that’s not feasible.
He said this new protocol is more in line with FEMA guidelines—and they’re more coordinated with the Oklahoma City Police department and Fire department.
Wolfe said the basic plan is available on the district website—but many specifics are retained to the information cannot be used against them.
