Interim Study Looks at Correlation Between Disposal Wells and Earthquakes

An interim study examines the correlation between wastewater disposal wells and earthquakes in Oklahoma.

The hearing brought together geologists from the Oklahoma Geological Survey, the Corporation Commission, and Oklahoma State University to lay the groundwork for future legislation through the sharing of information.

State Representative Jason Murphey says he learned what the Corporation Commission has been doing to monitor injection well sites and the commission heard loud and clear about the interests of state officials.

“Then it also accomplished letting state officials know that we are interested in oversight and that we place a high importance on the data being quickly analyzed, so that we can see what is really going on and we can have some eyes on the ground.”

The biggest surprise was the revelation of how long it’s taking the OGS to get data on earthquakes from private industry, considering it still doesn’t have information on the October 7 4.3 magnitude quake in Cushing.

Murphey hopes to follow up on the data transfer issue to correct and speed up the process.
