Flip through the radio stations in your car or visit the mall this month and you’ll probably hear “I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas” a time or two.  The song was recorded in 1953 by then 10-year-old Oklahoman Gayla Peevey.  The song’s popularity helped raise enough money to adopt Matilda, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s first hippo.  KOSU's Nikole Robinson Carroll had a chat with Peevey for the 60th anniversary of the song’s release.

Whovians young and old came together in Oklahoma City for the "Doctor Who" feature film “Day of the Doctor.”  When asked to choose a favorite incarnation of the Doctor, their answers were as varied as their age range.

New fans and devotees from the classic days of the series unite in their love of the Doctor, regardless of his form – but they don’t all agree on which of the Doctor’s companions they love most.

After failing results and a lawsuit, DHS is taking a different approach to shore up its foster care system. The agency is outsourcing. Contracting foster parent recruitment and management out to private agencies that have more free time and available resources. KOSU’s Quinton Chandler reports how the change is expected to help and the reaction from a couple of Oklahoma City’s foster parents.

What do you pump pure gas or do you use a little ethanol? In most of the country there’s no question you go with the mix but there are a lot of holdouts in Oklahoma who still demand a regular supply of ethanol free fuel. Why? What does pure gas do that the ethanol can’t? KOSU’s Quinton Chandler finds the answers and explains how federal standards may take away our choice between the two types of gas.

KOSU’s Ben Allen is leaving October 2nd (he’ll be the new Morning Edition host at WITF in Harrisburg, PA), and wrote this brief post about his time in Oklahoma.

The Blues: When most people hear it they think of Memphis or Chicago or New Orleans even Kansas City. But, there’s a resurgence of the blues in Oklahoma focusing on the present as well as the past.

Just off I-40 and Highway 69 north of Checotah sits the small town of Rentiesville. The historic black town of just 99 people includes the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame in an old bar which opened in 1936.

The volume and price of caviar from an Oklahoma conservation program make competition tough for private companies in neighboring states.

Shawnee singer/songwriter Samantha Crain was recently featured on NPR member station WFUV in New York.

Listen to their interview with her and watch her perform songs off her new album, Kid Face.

Running down the list of protected classes in Oklahoma, you see race, color, religion, sex, and more of what you would expect…and then there’s this: smokers. Yep, under Oklahoma state law, employers can’t discriminate against smokers, or non-smokers. The story of how that tiny clause made it into law is one filled with lobbyists and an attitude of a different time…

The mid 80s were a time of George Michael.

A time of “Back to the Future”.

And smoking:

“A lot more people did smoke and chew and dip…”

It’s not unusual to drive into a small town and find an old fashioned diner, but Sally’s Sandwich Shop in Pawhuska has an interesting story.

The owner, Sally Carroll took over the place in 1949 and is still working behind the counter to this day.

Walking into Sally’s Sandwich Shop in downtown Pawhuska might not seem any different than any other small diner in any other small town.

Local men and women sit at a bar which stretches about 30 feet in a room which isn’t any wider than maybe 15 feet.
