OKCMOA Friends' Lecture Series
February 27th 2013 6:30pm - 7:30pm at Oklahoma City Museum of Art
The Oklahoma City Museum of Art’s James C. Meade Friends’ Lecture Series welcomes critically-acclaimed curator, scholar, and author Michael Auping at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Auping’s presentation, “Theaters of Making: Four Decades in Artists’ Studios,” is a behind-the-scenes look at studio visits he has made over the past 40 years.Auping, chief curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, will discuss the process by which artists develop their studio environments into spaces that are physically and psychologically conducive to what they want to create. This historical and chronological talk will begin with artists Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko and evolve to the present by featuring the work of Philip Guston, Anslem Kiefer, Bruce Nauman, Agnes Martin, Andy Warhol, Susan Rothenberg, and Lucian Freud, among others.
Auping says, “Every artist’s studio is different. Some studios reflect the personality of the artist and some seem to contradict it. For example, one artist, Agnes Martin, was a very tough, straight-talking Canadian farm girl. Her studio was like a small cell for a Zen monk.”
Auping’s lecture will focus more on the artistic process rather than art history.
“If you were an artist, what kind of studio would you have, and how would that help you make art? I’m not an artist, but I think about that a lot when I am in an artist’s studio. That helps me to figure out who they are as well as who I am,” reflects Auping.
The James C. Meade Friends’ Lecture Series supports the Oklahoma City Museum of Art’s mission of enriching lives through the visual arts. Named after Lifetime Trustee and Friends supporter, James C. Meade, the series features internationally-recognized curators, critics, collectors, and cultural figures that engage and educate audiences with current perspectives in the visual arts.
The lecture is free for Museum members and students. Tickets are $10 for non-members. To purchase tickets online go to https:/tickets.okcmoa.com .
