Poet and Essayist R. Dwayne Betts Speaks
Poet and essayist R. Dwayne Betts will visit Oklahoma State University - Stillwater campus on Friday, February 28. He will give a craft talk on approaching the political with nuance at 3:30pm in the Library Browsing Room, and reading from his poetry and nonfiction in the same location at 7:00pm. Betts writes and lectures about the craft of writing, as well as the impact of mass incarceration on American society. He is the author of the memoir, A Question of Freedom: A Memoir of Learning, Survival, and Coming of Age in Prison (Avery/Penguin, 2009); the nonfiction work-in-progress, The Circumference of a Prison; the collection of poetry, Shahid Reads His Own Palm (Alice James Books, 2010); and another second collection of poetry (forthcoming from Four Way Books, 2015). Betts’ literary honors include the 2009 Beatrice Hawley Award for poetry, a Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference scholarship, the Holden Fellowship to attend the M.F.A. program at Warren Wilson College, etc.
