Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass”

April 13th 2013 8:00pm - 10:00pm at Civic Center

Famous for his West Side Story, Bernstein’s monumental Mass (A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers) is a musical theatre work.
An Oklahoma premiere, Canterbury’s performance will be staged theatrically in partnership with Oklahoma City University’s Bass School of Music. Cast includes the Mass Celebrant, Acolytes, Chorus, Children’s Chorus, and Street Singers with onstage and offstage orchestra.
The story relates the drama of a celebrant whose faith is simple and pure at first, but gradually becomes challenged under the weight of human misery, corruption, and the trappings of power.
Through a combination of jazz and rock, Leonard Bernstein represents the human struggle with faith. This truly epic musical work is performed by street musicians, dance, chorus, staging and various characters. “Mass” is a testament to the doubts that all believers experience, reaffirmation of faith, and a final Praise and Peace.
