George Washington Carver Day Celebration

Carver Day Celebration 2013
George Washington Carver National Monument is pleased to announce the park’s annual Carver Day celebration to be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend the 70th Carver Day anniversary to commemorate the life of George Washington Carver and the establishment of the national monument in his honor. Admission is FREE.

Special speakers this year include Dr. Linda Edwards, Carver scholar, historian, and author of George Washington Carver, Scientist and Symbol. Her book is a major work on Carver scholarship. Architectural Historian Debbie Sheals and Architect Angie Gaebler will discuss the 1872 Neosho Colored School project. The school is where Carver and many African Americans received an education. Storyteller Loretta Washington will entertain visitors with African-Americans stories. Musical performers include Lem Sheppard, Blues, Jazz, and Folk guitarist & musician; Sensational Wonders, gospel singing group; Kansas East State Sunshine Band Children’s choir, and area church choirs.

Activities are scheduled throughout the day, including storytelling, exhibitors, musical performances, guided tours, educational programs, children’s activities, Junior Ranger station, and much more.

Diamond Lions club will provide a food concession.

Carver Day is co-sponsored by the Carver Birthplace Association, with support from the National Park Foundation’s African American Experience Fund. George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver. The park is located two miles west of Diamond, Missouri, on Highway V, then south ¼ mile on Carver Road.
