The Oklahoma State House is looking for a new leader.

State Representative T.W. Shannon is resigning as Speaker.

Tuesday’s announcement didn’t come as much of a surprise with Representative Shannon running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Tom Coburn.

Shannon told his colleagues on the House floor that he will be ending his time as Speaker, but finishing the session as a Representative from Lawton.

“I will continue to serve with you here in the House for now representing the people of House district 62, and in that capacity I will continue fighting for conservative policies that I believe in, just as I always have.”

Shannon will not be able to seek reelection to the Lawton seat while he is running for Senate.

A replacement for the next Speaker position could be announced soon with three prominent Republicans, Mike Jackson of Enid, Jeff Hickman of Dacoma and Jason Nelson of Oklahoma City wanting the job.
