State lawmakers are looking at ways to create an alert system similar to Amber and Silver Alerts, but for runaways.

But, the idea isn’t getting much support from law enforcement.

Officers with the Oklahoma City and Tulsa Police Departments raised concerns about desensitizing the public if four or five runaway alerts get issued every day on local media.

But, Representative Joe Dorman says House Bill 2227 would be aimed only at specific law enforcement or media in the runaway’s zip code.

“Right now we do need to come up with something because in my opinion the current system while it does help in some cases it’s not addressing the overall problem and that’s getting some of these runaways back home.”

Police did raise concerns in Tuesday’s interim study that when a kid in Department of Human Services custody runs away the agency is failing to give adequate information to track him or her down.

HB 2227 is awaiting a hearing in the Senate next session.
