State Superintendent Janet Barresi once again calls on school boards and superintendents to give teachers across the state $2,000 pay raises.

During a task force on education workforce Monday, Barresi told education administrators they could use surplus funds to pay for the increases.

Superintendent Barresi told the Oklahoma Education Workforce Shortage Task Force the $100 million for the pay raises could come from $710 million in carry-over funds in schools across the state.

But, Norman Superintendent Joe Siano, a member of the task force, says schools just can’t move surplus funds to teacher pay.

“Salaries are reoccurring costs so to take one-time dollars if you could and move them to salary schedules becomes a challenge.

Doctor Siano says one way to pay for the raises is for lawmakers to return school funding to 2008 levels which is $200 million more than what was allocated this year.

One Response to “OK Superintendent Repeats Request for Teacher Raises”

  1. Dr. Freda Deskin says:

Amen, Dr. Siano. It takes someone who is actually in education and who is running a school to understand Dr. Barresi's math. I believe this is no more than a ploy to pit the teachers against the administrators and then to be able to blame the administrators when the teachers don't get raises. In a speech last Saturday, Dr. Barresi proposed that school administrators cut their budgets and combine it with any carry over monies to fund the pay raises. Of course, that idea assumes schools have a carry over. Dr. Barresi is out of touch with the reality in Oklahoma schools.
