Democratic Rep. Edward Markey Wins Mass. Senate Race

Democratic Rep. Edward Markey has won the special election in Massachusetts Tuesday for the U.S. Senate seat held by John Kerry. Kerry resigned the seat to become U.S. secretary of state.

Markey, 66, defeated Republican newcomer Gabriel Gomez, a 47-year-old businessman and former Navy SEAL.

The win by Markey comes even though some thought the race might be affected by recent scandals making the news.

The AP has more:

“Markey had an advantage of about 8 percentage points over Gomez with most precincts reporting late Tuesday, according to unofficial returns. He took to Twitter to thank voters after his victory.

“Thank you Massachusetts!” he tweeted. “I am deeply honored for the opportunity to serve you in the United States Senate.”

Markey outspent Gomez throughout the race, and Republicans were unable to match a well-oiled Democratic field organization in an election that saw relatively light turnout in much of the heavily Democratic state.”

Despite a long career in Congress, Markey will become the state’s junior senator to Elizabeth Warren, who has been in office less than six months. [Copyright 2013 NPR]
