In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Oklahoma in Tarrant v. Hermann Thursday. The Tarrant Water District in Texas had argued the Red River Compact gave them the right to take water from the river in Oklahoma, where it’s less salty, and thus less costly to treat. But the court sided with Oklahoma’s reasoning that state law superseded the agreement.
State Impact Oklahoma has been covering the case as it made its way to the nation’s highest court, and on Thursday, I asked Joe Wertz to put the decision in plain language for me, and also asked about what the decision means for the future of water compacts. Hear our conversation above.
