Grassroots Water Group Supports Oklahoma in Supreme Court Water Case

Filed by KOSU News in State Impact.
April 3, 2013

Oklahomans for Responsible Water Policy was created to help prevent the sale of Sardis Lake water storage rights to Oklahoma City, so it comes as no surprise that the group is against the idea of Texas taking Oklahoma’s water.

The ORWP on Monday filed a “friend of the court” brief supporting Oklahoma’s side in Tarrant Regional Water District vs. Herrmann.

The north Texas water district wants to use water in southern Oklahoma, despite the Sooner State’s resistance. The outcome could impact interstate water-sharing agreements across the country.

From the press release:

Former Attorney General Larry Derryberry, a member of the legal team that wrote and submitted the brief said, “We believe the Court will agree with us that the Texans have misread the Red River Compact and cannot arbitrarily decide to cross the Red River and take our water.
