‘Mary T. and Lizzy K.’: History’s Unlikely Friendship

Filed by KOSU News in Art & Life.
March 25, 2013

First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln was frequently accompanied by her dressmaker Elizabeth Keckly. The talented seamstress was perhaps the closest friend of the first lady. In her post-Civil War memoir Behind the Scenes, Keckly told her own story of slavery and self-emancipation, and her relationship with the Lincolns.

This unlikely friendship is the subject of director Tazewell Thompson’s play Mary T. and Lizzy K.

The play runs through April 28, 2013 in Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater.

Thompson talks with NPR’s Neal Conan about why he chose to tell this story. [Copyright 2013 NPR]
