Flu Cases Climbing
State health officials are seeing an increase in the amount of hospitalizations and death from flu this year.
Flu related deaths jumped from two to eight in just the last week.
Eight flu deaths so far this year is just one shy of the nine total from all of last year and hospitalizations are up from 316 last year to 345 so far this winter.
Epidemiologist Laurence Burnsead says last year was milder and peaked in March, but there’s no way to know why this year is worse.
“If there’s certain strains that are matching well with the vaccine that can be one factor, but then why there might be a milder season one year compared to another or why there might be an early start to a season versus maybe your typical time frame is not clearly understood.”
Burnsead says the flu season runs until April so there’s still time to get a flu shot for anyone over the age of six months.
He says if you do start to get flu like symptoms be considerate of others and stay home from work or school.
