My son is the age of the children who were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday. When we picked him up from school that afternoon, we were relieved that he had not heard the news — a very deliberate decision made by his school’s administration.

We decided to keep it that way. When we listened to the radio in the kitchen over the weekend, we turned on music in the living room where he was playing. When we talked about it in the minivan, we turned up the music in the back.

We expect he’ll hear at least a fragment of the news eventually, perhaps even today. When he does, we’re not sure what we’ll say.

What about you?

Do you have children at or near the ages of the victims in Newtown? Have they experienced the kind of loss that might inform or affect a conversation about the Newtown tragedy?

Share your story here.

We are grateful for your insight. We’ll share what we learn. Please stay tuned.
