Wayne Thomas, power plant maintenance director at American Airlines' Tulsa base, says many of the hangers at the facility are outdated and in need of upgrades, or work will have to go elsewhere.

The Vision2 proposal is up for a vote next week in Tulsa County. It’s a $750 million sales tax extension that would spread millions to the county and its communities for quality of life improvements of their choosing.

But the largest portion of Vision2 spending is earmarked for economic development, and most of that money will be used to modernize a city-owned complex occupied by bankrupt American Airlines.

The future of the airline’s presence in Tulsa, and of the base’s 7,000 employees, could be influenced by the vote, which tests the limit of how far a city will go to keep one of its largest employers.
