Opponents Say Affirmative Action Proposal Would Make State Look Bad

If voters approve State Question 759, the only real-world impact would be “bad light” for Oklahoma, opponents say.

Rep. Jabar Shumate, D-Tulsa, is a member of the state Affirmative Action Review Committee. He said SQ 759 aims at a “non-problem” and he suspects it was proposed to excite ugly thinking in some voters. The state has faced no significant allegations of people being the victim of reverse discrimination because of affirmative action, and the proposal’s authors have never been active in equal opportunity issues, he said. That leads him to suspect political motivations behind the referendum.
