State Superintendent Janet Barresi is reacting to criticism of her department not getting federal funding to Oklahoma school districts.

An article in the Tulsa World last week quoted several school districts including Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Mustang and Bartlesville who had yet to receive title one federal funds.

Superintendent Barresi says a big part of the problem has been personnel issues at the State Department of Education.

“We have a large amount of individuals that have been ill and those individuals it’s very difficult to cross train. So they’ve been out so it slowed those things down.”

Barresi says there are also issues as the department has been trying to streamline the process to avoid future delays.

She says there was no intentional attempt to try and purposely withhold the money from the schools.
