Obama Calls Romney In Rare Moment Of Courtesy Between Candidates

With most media organizations now projecting that Mitt Romney has secured enough delegates to clinch the Republican presidential nomination, President Obama called the former Massachusetts governor to offer his congratulations.

The Obama-Biden campaign offered this statement on Wednesday:

“At approximately 11:30 AM ET this morning, the President called Governor Romney to congratulate him on securing the Republican nomination. President Obama said that he looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America’s future, and wished Governor Romney and his family well throughout the upcoming campaign.”

The call marks an exception to the pointed attacks the president and Romney have been trading for months. Just Wednesday morning, ABC News reported that the Obama campaign is launching a new line of attack on Romney’s record as governor.

The Romney campaign has spent much of this week going after Obama for federal loan guarantees to the failed Solyndra solar company.

Romney will not officially become the GOP nominee until the Republican National Convention takes place in Tampa at the end of August. [Copyright 2012 National Public Radio]
