Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Katherine Boo has won acclaim writing about poor people in America for The Washington Post and The New Yorker.
Then she began writing about poor people in a single neighborhood in the vast Indian city of Mumbai.
Boo tells Morning Edition’s Steve Inskeep she was “completely clueless” when she started the book.
But she became a regular visitor to Mumbai after she married a man from India.
The result is her new book Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, death, and hope in a Mumbai undercity.
In it, she tells the story of one of the world’s largest cities, while keeping a narrow focus.
She writes of one struggling young man, who’s trying to make a living when he’s falsely accused of setting a neighbor woman on fire. [Copyright 2012 National Public Radio]
