Activist: 2 Foreign Journalists Killed In Syria

Filed by KOSU News in World News.
February 22, 2012

A Syrian activist said two foreign journalists were killed Wednesday by Syrian government forces shelling the restive central city of Homs. The report could not be immediately confirmed.

Omar Shaker said the two journalists were killed when several rockets hit a garden of a house used by activists and journalists in besieged Homs neighborhood of Baba Amr.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “there have been reports that an American and French journalists were martyred during the shelling that Baba Amr neighborhood was subjected to this morning.” The group, however, could not independently confirm the reports.

Foreign journalists have been sneaking into Syria illegally in the past months with the help of smugglers to cover the 11-month uprising against President Bashar Assad’s regime because the government bars almost all foreign journalists and human rights groups.

The government crackdown killed more than 5,400 people last year, the U.N. says.

Homs has been one of the hardest hit cities by the government crackdown and activists say hundreds of people were killed this month in the city.

An amateur video posted online by activist showed what they claimed were bodies of two people in the middle of a heavily damaged house. It said they were of the journalists. One of the dead was wearing what appeared to be a flak jacket. [Copyright 2012 National Public Radio]
