Pop Culture Happy Hour: The Golden Globes And Twitter Criticism

Filed by KOSU News in Art & Life.
January 20, 2012

Did you watch the Golden Globes? We did, and as the glamour-puss part of awards season begins in earnest, we take a moment to consider where the Globes fall in the grand scheme of things, how the winners stacked up, and — yes — how the hosting went after all that fretting. (Check out Dave Itzkoff’s piece in the New York Times Magazine on this very point.)

Then, we talk about a controversy that swirled last week after SPIN magazine announced that it was moving a lot of its shorter album reviews to Twitter. In the course of doing so, an editor made some statements about the unimportance of criticism in the age of unlimited downloading that struck some sour notes and provoked some strong responses (the language at that link, right from the URL and the headline, will not please your more restrained friends).

And as always, we’ll talk about what’s making us happy this week, including the episode of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast you’ve probably been hearing about all week, a great but stress-inducing piece about Michelle Williams, sharing movies we love with kids, and lots more.

You can find us on Twitter: me, Trey, Stephen, Glen and Mike. Or find us on Facebook and tell us what’s making you happy this week. [Copyright 2012 National Public Radio]
