Pop Culture Happy Hour: Is PBS The Next HBO? Plus Tomorrow’s Rediscoveries

We kick off this week’s discussion, which takes place through my froggy throat (which is much better now, thank you), with a little chat about a segment we call Tomorrow’s Rediscoveries — who or what might be ready for a comeback? Will it be a star of a beloved ’80s sitcom? Will it be somebody who, let’s face it, will never leave us whether he’s singing “Rocket Man” or doing a little “acting”? Will it be the other half of a famous duo? (I think there is a section in here where Trey actually considers stomping out in protest because I am sassing him. Listen for yourself.)
Speaking of comebacks, you might well know that Downton Abbey returned last weekend after a too-long absence between seasons. We use that fact as an opportunity to discuss PBS, which has seen big success from this series and also Sherlock, and which recently took the position that it’s looking to position itself as a premium network similar to, say, HBO. Is that really possible? Why or why not? These are the questions we’re looking to chat about.
And as always, we’ll talk about what’s making us happy this week, from unexpected movie reviews to hat poetry to music Stephen very much likes (as always). So have a listen, and find us on Twitter: me, Trey, Stephen, Glen and Mike. Or find us on Facebook and tell us who you think should be discovered next.
