President Obama will tonight use his third State of the Union address to sound themes about fair play and hard work — issues of enormous concern to the many Americans who are frustrated by an economy that’s been ailing and a government that they don’t believe is responding to their needs. With the 2012 presidential campaign well underway, his address is something of a kickoff for his re-election campaign.
According to excerpts released by the White House, Obama will declare that “it’s time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody.”
The president’s address begins just after 9 p.m. ET. We’re live blogging in the box below. You’ll see a message when new material has been added. Just click on it.
After the president’s address, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is scheduled to give the Republican response. We’ll follow his remarks as well.
