County assessors across the state now have a uniform cost for businesses that get property information and sell it.
Employees of county assessors who get massive requests from businesses can now charge $50 an hour to gather the information.
State Auditor Gary Jones determined the fees and now is telling assessors to be aware of how much time and effort is going into these open records requests.
“Gather all your information so as you’re doing these we’ll know exactly how much time you spent, and everything else, so next year if the costs are different we’ll adjust the fee.”
The fee schedule was created from a state law after complaints came in about businesses asking for the information and then selling it for a profit.
The fee doesn’t apply to individual property owners.
