Cain Sex-Harassment Accuser Confirms Politico Report’s Accuracy

A woman who filed a sexual-harassment complaint against front-running GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain more than a decade ago has confirmed for NPR the accuracy of a published report asserting that Cain was the target of two such complaints by female subordinates when he headed the National Restaurant Association in the late 1990s.

Cain on Monday said he was “falsely accused,” and the victim of a “witch hunt.” The association reportedly made five-figure payments to the women to settle the matter.

Cain, the former head of Godfather’s Pizza, has been riding high in recent Republican presidential preference polls. But the revelations, contained in a story in Politico, has put Cain and his campaign on the defensive.

Cain spent Monday defending himself against the report, which characterized his conduct toward the women as inappropriate for a business setting. But he offered changing versions of his recollection of the episode.

Early Monday, he denied knowledge of any settlements having been made to the women. Later in the day, however, in an interview on Fox News Channel, he said there was “some sort of settlement or termination” in one of the cases. The woman has asked that her name not be used at this time, out of concerns for privacy. [Copyright 2011 National Public Radio]
