Pop Culture Happy Hour: The Aging Of Admiration And A TV Pool Update

On this week’s Pop Culture Happy Hours, we start off with a discussion of the sometimes painful process of watching your admiration for a creative person age and change as you learn more about them — sometimes things you didn’t really want to know. Spurred by a discussion of a John Updike review that’s been kicking around for the last couple of weeks, we talk about whether losing some of your enthusiasm for your heroes is inevitable, whether it’s an echo of aging in general, and how dying young affects the life cycle of a reputation.
In cheerier news, we check in on the fall television betting pool that was instituted a few weeks ago while I was nursing my ankle. Was I right about CBS Fridays and A Gifted Man? How did Glen’s dinosaurs work out? And how are the Hamptons treating Stephen? We check in both on the content and the ratings of our shows and either brag or hang our heads, depending.
And of course, we close with what’s making us happy this week, because we never get tired of that.
