New DUI Law Takes Effect Next Week

A new stricter DUI law named after an OSU student killed by a repeat drunk driver goes into effect November First.
Starting Tuesday, drivers with a blood alcohol level above .15 will have to get a breathalyzer installed in their car and have the words “interlock required” on their license.
Keith Swezey says the new law named after his daughter, Erin Swezey, represents an effort to get serious about drunk driving in Oklahoma.
“In the past we’ve kind of treated it like a college prank when someone was drunk driving. They’d get off with a slap on the wrist. This takes that and throws it out.”
First time offenders would get the interlock devices for 18 months, second time offense would be 4 years and 5 years every subsequent conviction.
The Department of Public Safety is also starting a public service campaign about the interlock devices.
