Oklahoma is taking applications for a drawing to give 500 people up to $2,000 each to build safe rooms in the event of a tornado.

The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management will be taking the applications through January 3rd when a drawing will be held to select the 500 recipients of the safe room rebates.

Director Albert Ashwood says the annual program will provide incentives but also educate Oklahomans on the need for storm safety.

“Too often people have tornadoes that hit their community, that hit their home or their neighbor, and for two weeks their very interested in cellars or safe rooms and then they forget about it until the next storm season.”

Ashwood says the total comes to $1 million of federal funds which must go to a new safe room to be built by September 30th of next year.

He expects as many as 20,000 people to apply for the rebates at soonersafe.ok.gov.
