Governor Fallin, Superintendent Janet Barresi and Education Secretary Phyllis Hudecki are applying for a new Race to the Top grant this time dealing with Early Childhood Education.

Governor Fallin says the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge would bring in $60 million to upgrade teacher training, data tracking and testing.

Fallin says the money would not go to anything which would require more funding when the money runs out.

“One thing I’ve been very clear about and I know that Superintendent Barresi shares my concern with this grant is that it does not create another new government program, especially one that we cannot afford.”

Fallin says Oklahoma is already a leader in early childhood education and 75% of Oklahoma’s four year olds are enrolled in an early childhood education program.

The application is due October 19th and the results should be known by the end of the year.
