Lawmakers are looking at ways to keep Oklahomans safe when it comes to tornado outbreaks.

The House Committee on Public Safety held an interim study on tornado safety especially at trailer parks.

Representative Pat Ownbey says he asked for the study to find ways to protect residents of mobile and manufactured homes.

“I think part of that could be inspection and making sure that those mobile homes that are in those parks are installed safely, accurately and they meet all the requirements.”

One of the speakers at Tuesday’s meeting was a woman who lost her daughter because a trailer in a Chickasha mobile home park wasn’t secured properly when a tornado came through earlier this year.

Other parts of the study are looking at possibly requiring new trailer parks to install storm shelters.
