The Oklahoma National Guard is calling on the people of this state to help pitch in to build a chapel at its main training facility.

Camp Gruber in eastern Oklahoma once had 14 chapels before deactivation in 1947, but none were rebuilt after reactivation in 1977.

Chaplain Mike Taylor says because of that Oklahoma is one of just a few states without a chapel at the National Guard training facility for clergy to minister.

“A place where they can visit with soldiers and family members quietly and personally and in confidence where in the past we have met in dining facilities.”

Officials are hoping to raise $500,000 for the Thunderbird Chapel which is set to break ground next month.

Officials are hoping to have it complete by next spring in time for the 45ths return from serving in Afghanistan.
