Farmer’s Market Beating the Heat

Oklahoma State University-OKC farmer’s market isn’t letting the hot weather keep them from having two markets a week. OSU-OKC farmer’s market manager Cheryl Camp says customers are aware of the heat and may come earlier, but they’re busy from open to close.

“We have steady traffic all day long,” Camp said. “And of course our hard core customers that are used to getting there first thing and getting first picks of everything, they’re there every week. I haven’t seen any slow down as far as other traffic.”

Vendors have to work harder to keep plants watered and some crops had a shorter growing season than usual. Customers looking for corn will have a hard time finding large quantities because of the dry, hot weather.

“They’re needing to water the crops a lot more,” Camp said. “Some of them have lost various parts of various crops because it’ll be so hot and it just came on so quickly. But for the most part, we’re hanging in there.”

OSU-OKC farmer’s market is a member of the Oklahoma Grown Farmer’s Market program and is open every Wednesday from 11:30 am to 4 pm, and every Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm.
