OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – The Commissioners of the Land Office and BancFirst have agreed to settle a claim over funds allegedly embezzled from the Land Office and deposited in the bank.

Roger Melson Jr., the office’s former royalty compliance officer, is accused of embezzling more than $1.16 million in royalty payments intended for the Land Office. Court records indicate he has not yet entered a plea to the charges.

Land Office officials say the bank was responsible for accepting checks Melson deposited there. BancFirst says it opened an account after Melson presented documentation that the Secretary of State issued a trade name registration to him in the name of “Commissioner of the Land Office.”

Under the agreement, BancFirst will contribute $250,000 to 15 foundations benefiting public education in Oklahoma.
