New Bill would give Gov. Time Limit on Paroles

A State Senator is hoping to reintroduce legislation which could eventually remove the governor from the parole process.

Senator Constance Johnson says the legislation written by Representative Sue Tibbs last session would approve a parole request if the Governor hasn’t acted in 30 days.

The Oklahoma City Democrat says the legislation would also create a review of the bill’s success to see if a constitutional amendment is needed to completely remove the governor from paroles.

Senator Johnson says Oklahoma is the only state which still keeps the governor involved in the process.

An MGT audit two years ago showed removing the governor would save the state $40 million.

The measure has the support of the state’s Pardon and Parole Board.
