A vote to extend a one cent sales tax for capital projects in Oklahoma City passes with 54% of the vote.
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett greets a victorious crowd at the Cox Convention Center.
“The results are in and Oklahoma City’s golden age continues”
The vote faced stiff competition from police and fire unions as well as conservative Republicans.
Cornett says it’s not unusual for a campaign like this to divide a community.
“What makes this community unique is when the votes are in, and the results have been excepted, that we get back together and move forward together.”
The extension to the sales tax begins April First and will run for seven years and nine months.
It will raise $777 million to create projects like a new convention center, a new park where the current I-40 Crosstown is located, and extensions to biking and walking trails throughout the city.
