Perkins residents oppose road widening project

PERKINS, Okla. (AP) – Some residents in Perkins are hoping to persuade the state transportation department to either change or abandon plans to widen U.S. 177.
Some call it a “road to nowhere” and say they’ll ask the Perkins City Council to join them in opposing the $8 million project.
The Transportation Department project is intended to correct a severe drainage problem on the north edge of Perkins. Officials say the intersection of 177 and State Highway 33 floods with heavy rains.
Department of Transportation division engineer Casey Shell says the water sometimes gets two to three feet and creates a safety hazard.
The project also calls for redoing the intersection and widening a half-mile segment of 177 from two lanes to four lanes from the north edge of Perkins to the SH 33 intersection.
